The war in Ukraine RAE ARGENTINA TO THE WORLD

Argentina supports UN resolution against Russia

Argentina voted in favor of a UN General Assembly Resolution condemning Russia's attempt to annex Ukrainian territories.

The motion rejected the separatist referendums in the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

The Resolution was approved with 143 votes in favor, 35 abstentions and 5 against.

After the vote, the Argentine Foreign Ministry stated in a communiqué: "consistent with its traditional positions, and as it has expressed in various forums in relation to the war in Ukraine, Argentina reiterates, as it has already stated in relation to Crimea, that only through fully respecting the Charter of the United Nations, international law, the sovereignty of states and their territorial integrity, will it be possible to arrive at solutions that are fair and lasting for all political and social actors".

The Argentine ambassador to the UN, María del Carmen Squeff, said in turn that any "attempt to partially or totally break the national unity and territorial integrity of a State or its political independence by force is incompatible with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations".

She therefore stressed that, "from the point of view of international law, these referendums are null and void; they have no legal value and do not alter the status of such territories."
