President Alberto Fernández traveled to Antarctica to commemorate a new anniversary of Argentina's presence in that continent.

From the Marambio Base, the President also reaffirmed Argentina's sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands, in a message broadcast on national TV.

He also stated that the South Atlantic represents "a vital enclave of our territorial and political sovereignty".

In this context, the Head of State ratified Argentina's commitment to the "conservation of the Antarctic ecosystem".

His trip to Marambio was to celebrate the Argentine Antarctic Day, which commemorates the foundation of the first base, Orcadas, on February 22, 1904.

"You mark the continuity of 119 years of Argentina's permanent presence in Antarctica", said the President to the military and scientific personnel of the base.

In this context, the President spoke with our RAE colleague, Marcelo "Chelo" Ayala, from the Italian language service, who transmitted from Antarctic bases this summer.

In that dialogue, the Head of State remarked that "Antarctica is a scientific research center of great importance for mankind and for our country".

Likewise, he pointed out that "while others only think in business", those carried out by the State in the white continent are "investments where the whole society wins".

Mr Fernández also told "Chelo": "I am very happy that Radio Nacional is also in Antarctica", referring to radio station LRA36 Radio Arcángel San Gabriel, which operates in the Argentinean base Esperanza.
